A GTA is a highly trained lay woman and a MUTA is a highly trained lay man who instruct medical students and other learners in safe, comprehensive, (breast and pelvic for the female body and urogenital for the male body) clinical invasive exam techniques utilizing their bodies as primary teaching tools. As simulated professional patients, GTAs and MUTAs provide a standardized, quality controlled, low-risk learning environment designed to lessen learner anxiety. The GTA or MUTA act as both instructor and simulated patient. It is the specialized skills of these women and men in independent instruction of invasive exam procedures and genital and reproductive anatomy that make them an excellent resources for instructing learners in the fields of medicine and health care.
